In Anishinaabe tradition, Respect (Mnaadendimowin) is one of the Seven Grandfather Teachings and is represented by the buffalo (bison). Respect is about honoring all living things, including people, animals, and the land, and understanding that everything is interconnected.
The buffalo symbolizes respect because it gives everything of itself to sustain the people—its meat for food, hide for clothing and shelter, and bones for tools. Despite its great power, the buffalo moves with grace and humility, teaching us that true strength comes from respecting the balance of life and giving back to the community.
By embodying the respect of the buffalo, we learn to live in harmony with others, appreciate the interconnectedness of life, and carry ourselves with dignity and gratitude.
